Aloe Vera And ConstipationThe German Commission E permits the use of aloe for treatment of constipation. This use is based on the presence of 1,8-dihydroxyanthracene derivatives which have a laxative effect. The monograph indicated side effects of cramp-like discomfort of the gastrointestinal tract and recommends a dose of 20-30 mg hydroxyanthracene derivatives/day, calculated as anhydrous aloin. The monograph warns against chronic use or abuse due to loss in potassium, an increase in effectiveness of cardiac glycosides, and an effect on antiarrhythmic agents (Blumenthal, 1998).
