Aloe Vera SupplementsSince 1994, dietary supplements, including some aloe products, have been regulated under the Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act (DSHEA). The DSHEA requires no proof of safety for dietary supplements on the market before October 15, 1994. Labeling requirements for such supplements allow warnings and dosage recommendations as well as substantiated "structure or function" claims. All claims must prominently note that they have not been evaluated by the FDA, and they must bear the statement "This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease" SeaSilver Supplement, Including Aloe Vera, Banned From MarketUnfortunately aloe vera supplements have been associated with supplements that have attracted lawsuits from the Feeral Trade Commission and the FDA. One example is the dietary supplement "Seasilver", whose promoters made unsubstantiated medical claims. Seasilver is a liquid multi-vitamin/mineral/amino acid dietary supplement that purports to contain, among other ingredients, aloe vera, phyto-silver (purportedly a plant-based silver), sea vegetables, the herb Pau D'Arco, and cranberry concentrate. A 32-oz. bottle of Seasilver costs $39.95. Seasilver was promoted as a safe and effective treatment or cure for 650 diseases, including AIDS and cancers, and to cause substantial and permanent weight loss. The FDA has seized inventories of the product.
